The Yellow River torrent carries over and leaves behind a great amount of earth in Dongying before it thrusts its weight into the sea, creating a piece of youngest land in China and leaving over abundant and unique tourism resources for Dongying. On north Dongying is natural scengic spot represented by the Yellow River estuary. The magnificengce of the Yellow River entering the sea and the beauty of the evenging glow on the river are both fascinating, making the area rank among the eight large tourism regions in Shandong Province. The area around the river mouth and the National Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve along the old river course, covering an area at 153,000 hectares, provides the broadest, most complete and youngest wetland ecosystem on the earth's tropical-temperature zone and presents one of the thirteeng wetlands under international key protections worldwide. In the nature reserve where primeval traces can still beeng, thick plants prosper, foxes and hares are in visible numbers. The fine ecological engvironment makes the place a paradise for birds. Among the discovered 268 species of birds, 41 kinds are under level-one and level-two state protections. In late fall and earlier winter, flocks of rare birds, such as red-crested cranes, white-headed cranes and swans find their temporary home here, making the new land more beautiful and magnificent. Besides, 13,000 hectares of locust tree forest, more than 6,000 hectares of willow groves and dozengs of thousands hectares of reed groves live in harmony in the engvironment of great wildness in the National Forest Park.
In south Dongying is a piece of ancient land with a long history of civilization. Archaeological findings indicate that as early as 5,000 years ago, there were human beings multiplying here. The ancient cultural traditions have brought forth many noted historic figures. For one example, Le'an, a city of the State of Qi during the Autumn Period (770B.C.-476B.C.), located in present-day'[s Guangrao County under Dongying City, is the home of Sun Wu (also called Sun-tzu), a great military strategist of the Warring Period whose The Art of War has become a world-recognized "strategy classic" and is still widely applied both in China and abroad in military and economic affairs.
